How do we make learning meaningful and catalyzing? Many schools have attempted to create projects to solve problems, but they are often limited in scope and lack a clear structure, don’t involve business or university partners, fail to link the problem to a real issue or problem, and only impact a class or small group of students who never see the implementation of their ideas. Between 2016 and 2018 the Energy Innovation Center (EIC) and the Parkway West Career and Technology Center (PWCTC) in Pittsburgh conducted 10 Design Challenges impacting over 250 high school students with a wide variety of skills and backgrounds from twelve different schools in the Pittsburgh region. The Design Challenges provided real-world experiences for high school students to solve operational or building-related problems at the EIC or PWCTC.
